This edition of Mar Jacob of Sarug's (d. 521) homily on the Veil of Moses asks what the veil means. Jacob finds the hermeneutical key in Paul’s exegesis of Gen. 2:24 – that the man and the woman becoming one symbolizes Christ and the Church. The bride must wear a veil until such time as her bridegroom comes to remove it at their marriage ceremony. The volume constitutes a fascicle of The Metrical Homilies of Mar Jacob of Sarug, which, when complete, will contain the original Syriac text of Jacob's surviving sermons, fully vocalized, alongside an annotated English translation.

In this fifth installment of the long Homily 71, On the Six Days of Creation, Jacob treats of the events of the fifth day, the creation from the waters of the various species of fish and reptiles, as well as the assorted types of birds and other winged creatures. God created them all in wisdom and in love, prepared everything that they would need and endowed them with the natural characteristics required for their particular type of life. Jacob highlights the fact that the creation of these animals on the fifth day to inhabit the land and water separated on the third day is a symbol of the Resurrection of Christ.

"Recognized as a saint by both Chalcedonian and non-Chalcedonian Christians alike, Jacob of Sarug (d. 521) produced many narrative poems that have rarely been translated into English. Of his reported 760 metrical homilies, only about half survive. Part of a series of fascicles containing the bilingual Syriac-English editions of Saint Jacob of Sarug's homilies, this volume contains two of his homilies on Jacob. The Syriac text is fully vocalized, and the translation is annotated with a commentary and biblical references. The volume is one of the fascicles of Gorgias Press's Complete Homilies of Saint Jacob of Sarug, which, when complete, will contain all of Jacob's surviving sermons"--

Mêmrâ 72 is a meditation on the fall of Adam and its consequences, subjecting all creation to corruption. God’s mercy, however, will restore everything to a spiritual, incorruptible state that will exist eternally in the unending light of Christ.

A fifth-sixth century clergyman-cum-theologian, Jacob of Serugh (also spelled Sarug), was an extremely prolific writer. Not counting a number of works in prose he is said to have written nearly 800 homilies, mostly on themes of theological import or biblical stories and personalities. These homilies are composed in metre: each line has twelve vowels. So far less than 150 such homilies have been edited and/or translated. Hexaemeron is an exposition of the first six days of the universe. Jacob dedicated an extra homily to the sabbath, making a total of seven homilies. This genre was known earlier in Greek. Jacob's is the first of the kind in Syriac. Currently the only complete text of Jacob's Hexaemeron is available in an edition by Bedjan (1905-10), but with no translation. This is the first time that this highly interesting work is made available in its entirety, accompanied by an English translation. The editor studies six complete manuscripts and one containing only two homilies. None of these seven manuscrips was available to Bedjan, and one of them is presumably as old as the principal manuscript used by Bedjan.

"Jacob of Serug was born at Curtem on the Euphrates, ca. 451. Very little is known of his life. He probably studied at the school of Edessa. He became a monk and priest. Early in life he began writing and is thought to have composed more than 700 homilies." "Jacob, "flute of the Holy Spirit and harp of the faithful church," had a great love of the Mother of God. In this volume, four homilies have been chosen from the Syriac texts. The poetry is typological and rooted in Scripture. It offers, as Professor Brock notes in his Introduction, an alternative to the "liberal critical approach to the bible" or to an excessively "fundamentalist approach."" --Book Jacket.
